I used it today, 2016-12-18, together with Spyderco Medium/Fine sharpening stones ("double stuff" is think they were called when I bought them in the early 2000s), and this combination put a razor sharp edge in less than 10 minutes. It is a bonus that you can buy another rod when the existing one gets clogged up with metal debris. I think you can clean the existing rod somehow also.
